John Lescroart brings us another great Dismas Hardy novel, A Plague of Secrets.  I have read this series from the beginning.  I have enjoyed watching Dismas, Abe, Frannie, and others grow, fight, love, and live.  This novel brings us into Hardy’s life at a time when Abe is having a huge crisis of faith, faith in himself.  A Plague of Secrets once again shows us that the big tough Abe can be vulnerable, just like the rest of us.

John Lescroart brings back a lot of the ‘bit’ players from his other novels.  It is always enjoyable to find out how these folks are doing.  It is like hearing about your grandmother’s best friends children and grandchildren.  You will notice that I really enjoy reading books that take me back into previous character’s lives.

My only wishes for this book would be that there was more Frannie and Dismas time.  These two characters have been through so much together, I enjoy seeing them interact.  I also wish that Abe’s older boys had come to visit their father during his extreme time of need.  There are a couple brief references to Frannie and Dismas’ children, I don’t know how hard it would have been to work Abe’s sons into the story.

On the whole, I really enjoy John Lescroart’s books.  They allow me to lose myself, which is a very good thing sometimes.  I especially appreciate his thanks to his readers at the end of this book.  It reads as true thankfulness, much like Stephen King’s thanks to his ‘Gentle Reader’.  Pick this book up!

Enjoy!
